24 RYUKYU-SHIKKI [ Okinawa ]

Colorful lacquerware that conveys the light of Ryukyu

Using local wood like Deigo (Indian Coral Tree) and Shitamagi (Japanese Snowbell) for the base of lacquerware, native plants such as Bashō (Japanese Fiber Banana) and Gettō (Shell Ginger) are colorfully drawn with a technique called tsuikin (raised lacquer decoration), which was uniquely developed over a long history. Everything of Ryukyu is filled in the lacquerware.
