- Schedule
- Nushiya Ichimatsu—WAJIMA Nuri Lacquerware Chopstick-Making Experience
Oct. 19 (Sun.)
1) 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
2) 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm - Detail
- WAJIMA Nuri lacquerware is made through three processes: “kiji-zukuri (making of a wooden base)," forming the shape of a bowl; “urushi-nuri (lacquering)," applying lacquer to the base; and “kashoku (decorating)," adding decoration with gold inlay and other decorative elements. The total process consists of approximately 100 steps, and 23 of which are lacquering.
This workshop will allow you to experience part of the processes of making WAJIMA Nuri lacquerware chopsticks, while listening to a lecture by a WAJIMA Nuri lacquerware artisan.
Because the entire process cannot be completed in a single day, the chopsticks you will make during this experience will be top-coated at Nushiya Ichimatsu in Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture and sent to you at a later date. (It takes about one month to complete.)
If you wish, you are free to take home the chopsticks you made during each step of the workshop.
Processes to experience:
1. Kiji-gatame (applying raw lacquer for reinforcement)
2. Nuno-kise (reinforcing wood by pasting it with cloth using lacquer)
3. Jizuke (applying a base coat)
4. Naka-nuri (applying black lacquer after water sanding)
You can also experience whetting before and after each step.
